Yoga is a holistic discipline originating from ancient India and Pilates is a comprehensive physical system created by German-born Joseph Pilates in 1915 while being held at a British internment camp. Both Yoga and Pilates offer stress relief, build physical strength, improve endurance and balance and promote flexibility, coordination and good posture. However, the two disciplines are intrinsically quite different.
- Yoga focuses more on the spiritual side of health and wellness.
- Both utilize a mat, but Pilates also uses equipment such as the reformer, cadillac, chair, barrel, tower and more.
- In Yoga, a pose is held and repetitive movements are utilized for gradually improving flexibility. In Pilates, you do not hold poses or repeat movements in sequences in the same session.
- Yoga emphasizes the mind-body and spiritual connection whereas Pilates pays attention to the mind-body connection for the precision and control of each movement with regards to proper body alignment.
Why should you have to choose between Yoga and Pilates? Incorporating multiple disciplines such as Pilates, Yoga, strength training, cardio and meditation into your health, wellness and fitness program will help you be the best version of yourself. Be mindful and move.
One of the great myths about Pilates is that it is just for women. After all, Pilates was developed by a man and was originally used to help the men who were being held in a British internment camp during WWI stay healthy and strong. Through smooth movements and proper technique, Pilates re-trains your body to move in safer, efficient patterns that are invaluable for injury recovery, sports performance, good posture and optimal health. So while Pilates is commonly associated with women’s fitness, men can greatly benefit from this form of exercise as well.
Pilates is power. Pilates is strength. Pilates is performance.
Since each body is unique, be weary of studios and instructors that offer one-size-fits-all classes. While some larger studios may have larger schedules, they also have larger classes and that means less personalized attention. Cliff and Norm didn’t go to a place where nobody knew their names, did they? Additionally, many larger studios and franchises run the exact same classes with the exact same movements over and over again. That doesn’t sound motivating to us. Importantly, you should ask if instructors are trained and certified through reputable Pilates institutions.
Mindful Movement Pilates is owner-instructed with small group or private classes that are consistently different and challenging. Essentially, you will never take the exact same class twice. Plus, we will know your name and modify each session to your unique needs.

Because Pilates was originally created to rehabilitate and strengthen internment camp detainees and injured dancers, it is an ideal discipline for people looking for rehabilitation and remedial exercise as a result of a medical condition or injury. It is a great exercise option that promotes agility and good posture by strengthening your core or “center” and toning your body.
Pilates can help with:
- Improving spinal discomfort and diseases by working on bad posture that can affect ligaments tendons and muscles in your back and shoulders
- Increasing core strength, promoting muscular symmetry and spinal health by evenly working both sides of the body
- Teaching proper rehabilitation techniques through muscle alignment and proper body positioning
- Increasing flexibility through dynamic stretching
- Restoring function with herniated or slip discs by activating the stabilization muscles in the areas surrounding the neck and back with disc problems
- Providing a more active rehabilitative approach than some passive physical therapy methods by being a whole-body exercise routine
- Aiding in the recovery of hip and knee replacement surgeries by strengthening the muscles around the joints
- Increasing blood circulation to speed the healing process by improving heart health and maintaining proper oxygenation of the body
- Strengthens bones and increases bone density in osteoporosis patients by using resistance training
- Motivating you on the road to recovery
